CRAIG Thomson, the Labor MP given $150,000-plus from the ALP to pay his legal bills, has lodged plans for a $100,000 home renovation.

Council records reveal Mr Thomson and his partner Zoe Arnold lodged a development application with Wyong Council on July 27, weeks before revelations that the NSW ALP had bailed him out to avoid bankruptcy and forced resignation from parliament, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Last night the embattled MP – already under fire over accusations of union credit card misuse – was being quizzed by senior party officials after they were alerted to his planned extensions.

Council records show plans for a new deck and first floor to the Bateau Bay home Mr Thomson shares with his pregnant partner.

A senior Labor source yesterday confirmed the only reason Labor paid Thomson’s bills was that he had created the impression the legal bills would bankrupt him and could bring down the government.

“If the government’s at risk that is a clear argument they have got to (fund the action). We weren’t going to sign up to something else,” they said.

Mr Thomson is understood to have claimed the DA was designed to increase the value of the property so he could borrow against it to pay the remainder of his legal bills.

Meanwhile, a public servant in charge of a Fair Work Australia inquiry into Mr Thomson has been promoted.

Tim Lee, general manager of the industrial watchdog, has been made a Commissioner.

Mr Lee has spent more than two years investigating claims against Mr Thomson, relating to his five years as head of the Health Services Union.

And sources said last night that HSU national secretary Kathy Jackson, who blew the whistle on Mr Thomson’s credit card aberrations, has been admitted to hospital – possibly for stress – a week after she received a threat.
