Amazing legacy: Maurice John Young left £60,000 to the Devonshire church
A recluse who lived in a shoddy-looking shed has left £60,000 to a church in his will.
Maurice John Young, 81, reportedly never married or had children.
But he did fall in love with Hatherleigh Parish Church after moving to the Devon village in 1947.
The former farmer, known locally as Johnny, was buried in the church’s grounds, as were his parents.
His gift will be used to bring forward planned renovations.
The Reverend Ruth Hansford described the money as ‘a bolt out of the blue’, and stressed the church’s gratitude ‘for John’s generosity’.
She added: ‘We really were not expecting it. No one thought he had that kind of money.’
The vicar said the executor of Mr Young’s will has agreed for the £60,000 to be used for work being done on the Old Vestry and Old Schools, which form part of the buildings owned and maintained by the church and used by the community.
She added that Mr Young’s considerable donation means that the project, which many believed would require up to ten years of fundraising, can now begin far sooner.
‘We are continuing to apply for grants and fundraise for the work on these two buildings, but John’s generous gift means that we will be able to start the work much earlier than we thought, once we have finalised the plans with the architect and received listed buildings consent,’ she said.
Local councillor Dennis Bater said of Mr Young, who died in a car crash in July 2010: ‘I always had a lot of time and patience for the old boy, who didn’t have many friends. [The donation] is a humbling gesture.
‘He was a recluse who lived alone in a shed and a caravan on the edge of the wood.
‘He was very happy there and it would have killed him to live in a home.’
He added: ‘I think it is wonderful that he has left this money to the church. It is really kind.’
Surprising legacy: This dilapidated shed outside Hatherleigh was part of Johnny Young’s home, along with a caravan
£60,000: The parish church in Hatherleigh, Devon, can worry less about a planned 10-year charity drive

I hope that Mr. John Young lived as a recluse by choice, as he certainly had a very good heart. It would be sad to think he was one of those inwittingly lonely old person. He certainly deserves a memorandum for his generosity.
