Building an emergency kit for your car

Many factors can turn a simple episode of car trouble into a life-threatening or at least very uncomfortable situation. Are you near civilization? Do you have a cell signal? Is the weather bad? Is it day or night? Are you alone or with other people? So many times we just hop in the car and take off toward our destination without preparing for any mishaps that may happen in-between. Putting together a simple emergency kit for your car is very simple, pretty cheap, and can literally save your life in bad situations. The ready-made kits are a great place to start, but tend to lack some of the essentials. Carry extra supplies when traveling long distances or to wilderness areas. It seems simple, but it’s easy to forget. Here’s a list of simple must-have items to always keep in your car.

  •  You need something to keep all this stuff in.  I like backpacks.  They make your kit very easy to grab and go, and if you have to walk from the car toward help you can just take the backpack with everything you may need on your hike.  Some of the good ready-made kits come in a backpack.  To do it on the cheap though just grab an old school backpack out of your closet or from a thrift shop.
  •  It sounds simple, but people don’t think about it.  Water is the most life-essential thing on the planet, and dehydration can kill you in a matter of hours in the right conditions.  Throw at least a gallon bottle and a half-dozen single-serving bottles in your trunk.  Remember you probably won’t get stranded alone.  It’s also generally the solution for an overheated engine, which makes it a multi-purpose item.  Know how to add water to your radiator, and always let the engine cool completely before popping the cap.  Bad burns to the hands, arms, and face can come from the liquid and steam which escape from a still-hot radiator when the cap is opened.
  • Being hungry isn’t immediately life-threatening, but it’s very unpleasant.  Food gives your body energy to stay warm, walk to help, deal with other exertion that might be necessary to get you out of trouble, and even just to think clearly.  Energy bars (Clif, Powerbar, etc.) are very compact, calorie-dense, easy to pack, and pretty cheap to acquire at a big box store.  Get about 1500-2000 calories worth (remember, for you and a friend) and throw them in your pack.  
  • A dead battery is probably the most common type of “car trouble” you can encounter.  A quick jump-start from a kind citizen can get you on your way without having to wait for a tow, hitchhike, etc.  Know how to jump-start your car, at a bare minimum where the battery is and how to get to it.
  • This should need no explanation.  LED flashlights are very bright, use less power, and don’t have the problem of broken glass bulbs.  Hand-crank flashlights also negate the need for batteries.  You can pick up a hand-crank LED flashlight from anywhere you find tools, even drug and department stores.
  • This is a more driver-dependent item.  If you wouldn't know what to do with them, even basic tools are a waste of space.  However, if you’re a little mechanically inclined them a few simple tools can save the day.  No matter what at least have a simple multi-tool and some duct tape.  I carry a bigger car tool kit, but I really like the pliers- and crescent-wrench-type multi-tools.  They save a lot of space and weight.  You can often find them in a hardware store bargain bin, and they’re all over the place around the holidays.
  •  If you break down on the highway at night you should definitely put out flares or reflectors to keep other cars from crashing into the back of your car, or into you if you happen to be out getting your emergency kit or spare tire from the trunk.  They’re also useful for fire-starting, if you should ever have a need in a survival situation.
  • You know that old jacket that you never wear, that just takes up room in your closet?  Throw it in your kit.  Oh, and that old pair of ugly sweatpants?  Those too.  Mismatched socks?  At least a pair.  If you have to camp out in your car you won’t care how you look; you’ll just want to be warm.  A knit cap is a great idea too.  You know you have one you never wear.
  •  Aluminized mylar was originally developed by NASA, and now we can get emergency blankets made out of it very cheaply.  Commonly called space blankets, the shiny plastic sheets reflect heat toward your body and make a huge difference when trying to keep warm.  Any sporting goods store that sells camping equipment will have them.  Get two.
  • A basic first aid kit is another must-have.  Basic bandaging supplies and over-the-counter pain relievers are a minimum.  Find a good ready-made kit or make one yourself, and always replace anything you use.  Adventure Medical Kits has a variety of great kits which are available at sporting goods stores or from their website.
