Owners of a Bangladeshi garment factory have surrendered to a court in Dhaka, more than a month after being charged over a fatal blaze in November 2012.
Delwar Hossain and his wife, Mahmuda Akter, finally turned themselves in to authorities on Sunday, after living freely in the capital since they were charged in December 2013 for their role in the blaze that gutted the Tazreen factory, where workers tailored clothing for major Western retailers such as Walmart.
More than 110 workers died in the incident.
Prosecutor Anwarul Kabir announced on Sunday that the couple had arrived at Dhaka magistrate’s court and were now in custody pending a bail hearing.
It was not clear why the couple had decided to give themselves up.
They both face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment if convicted.
Marked as the country’s deadliest industrial fire at the time, the Tazreen disaster brought attention to working conditions in the all-important garment industry.
Bangladesh suffered an even deadlier tragedy, just months later, when the Rana Plaza garment factory building on the outskirts of Dhaka collapsed, killing 1,135 people.
An investigation found that when the fire broke out, managers and security guards told workers it was part of a regular drill, making it too late for many workers to escape.
Investigators further reported that the nine-storey factory had no emergency exits, and workers desperately attempting to escape found that some of the gates were locked from the outside.
Victims of the fire, many of them women who were paid as little as 37 dollars per month, found themselves overcome by the smoke inside the building.
Garment industry in Bangladesh is the world’s second largest after China. Factory owners, many of whom also lawmakers and owners of banks and insurers, wield major influence in the impoverished country.
This the first time Bangladesh has sought to prosecute factory owners in the influential garment industry.
