Businessman ‘wanted to blackmail Silvio Berlusconi for 5 million euros’

New charges including the fraudulent use of public funds have been laid
against Mr Lavitola and several others including Senator Sergio De Gregorio,
from Mr Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party.

Mr Lavitola is an associate of Bari businessman Giampaolo Tarantini, who
admitted to providing high-class escorts for Mr Berlusconi’s parties and
investigators want to question him about whether he pressured Mr Tarantini
to lie about the escorts.

Mr Tarantini, 36, and his wife Angela Devenuto, 34, were arrested in their
luxury apartment in Rome in September as part of an alleged 500,000 euro
(£410,000) blackmail plot against the former prime minister.

At the time Mr Berlusconi admitted making payments to the couple saying he was
simply helping Mr Tarantini and his family in a time of need.

Mr Berlusconi’s spokesman was not available for comment on Tuesday.
