AN alliance of conservationists is calling for Antarctic waters to be protected in the world’s largest marine reserve.
The Antarctic Ocean Alliance (AOA), meeting in Hobart this week, is made up from groups including the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), Greenpeace and the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition.
The AOA says it wants 19 bodies of water surrounding the frozen continent to be declared as marine reserves, which would prevent fishing in the area.
If implemented, it would be the largest expanse of protected oceans in the world.
“The proposal would add to the land-based protection already in place for Antarctica,” AOA spokesman Steve Campbell said yesterday.
“(It would) include the region’s unique ocean habitats as no-take areas – a lasting legacy for future generations.
“While still one of the most pristine environments left in the world, the ocean around Antarctica is fast attracting industrial fishing interests.”
Mr Campbell said 10,000 species would be protected by the reserves, including emperor penguins, minke and killer whales, seals and colossal squid.
