There has been an explosion at an acid plant in the north-west Queensland city of Mount Isa.

Police say no-one was injured in the explosion at the Incitec Pivot plant, but authorities are concerned about a smoke plume generated by the blast.

Company spokeswoman Sandi Harwood says just after 5:00pm (AEST) a chemical reaction caused an explosion and a plume of smoke at the plant.

“Basically there was a chemical reaction in a water treatment cooling area,” she said.

“It’s a routine procedure but there was a chemical reaction which created a plume. Our people did the right thing and called emergency services – police and fire were on the scene.

“There were no injuries and no loss of production.”

Police have placed a 100-metre exclusion zone around the site.

The acid plant is alongside the Mt Isa mine, which has been evacuated.

The Queensland Fire and Rescue Service is currently conducting air quality tests.
