China urges UK to repair ties

“China hopes the British side will earnestly respect its concern on the Tibet-related issues and take concrete actions to create favorable conditions for bilateral relations to grow,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying on Tuesday.

British Prime Minister David Cameron and his Deputy Nick Clegg met Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama at St Paul’s Cathedral in London last May, causing damage to bilateral ties between London and Beijing.

The Chinese spokeswoman also acknowledged that China-UK relations were damaged by British officials’ meeting with Tibetan spiritual leader.

China spent nearly £8 billion on British infrastructure projects in 2012 but has threatened to not invest again until Cameron apologizes for meeting the Dalai Lama.

The Chinese government says Britain needs to make amends before relations can return to normal.

A high-level trade delegation due to have been led by the British Prime Minister last month has been cancelled due to the current rift in relations between the two countries.

Moreover, plans for China’s premier Li Keqiang to visit Britain have been put on hold.
