Former Energy secretary Chris Huhne has hired Harry Redknapp’s legal team to fight allegations of perverting the course of justice, it emerged today as he appeared in court over allegations he and his ex-wife perverted the course of justice.
The millionaire MP stepped down as Energy Secretary last month after he was charged over allegations that he used his ex-wife Vicky Pryce’s name to escape speeding penalty points.
The pair exchanged strained smiles and muttered under their breath as they appeared before a crown court judge for the first time today.
Former energy secretary Chris Huhne, 57, left, and his ex-wife Vicky Price, 59, right, appeared at Southwark Crown Court today charged with perverting the course of justice
And it was revealed that Huhne has appointed John Kelsey Fry QC, the top criminal barrister who represented football boss Redknapp at his tax fraud acquittal last month, to fight the case.
Huhne, 57, who remains the MP for his home town of Eastleigh in Hampshire, is accused of wrongly telling police investigators that his then wife Pryce, 59, was driving his car when it was caught by a speed camera.
The car had been travelling in a 30mph motorway contraflow between Stansted Airport in Essex and London when it was caught by the speed camera in March 2003
But accusations of impropriety only emerged in 2010 after the father-of-five admitted an affair with PR adviser Carina Trimingham and ended his 26-year marriage to Pryce.

The pair didn’t speak to each other during a previous court appearance at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in February
Huhne quit his job as a Cabinet minister On February 3 after it was announced that he would face criminal charges following an eight-month police investigation.
Today the pair, who are both charged with perverting the course of justice, were told by Mr Justice Saunders that a summer two-week trial was likely to take place at Southwark Crown Court before October.
The pair made brief whispers during
the hearing, compared to their complete silence towards each other at
their first court hearing at Westminster magistrates’ court on February
17.

Huhne, from Dutton
Lane, Eastleigh, and Pryce, from Crescent Grove, Clapham, south London,
will appear again for a plea and case management hearing in late May.
Pryce was listed in court by her Greek forename, Vasiliki, and wore a black and white cotton scarf and black-rimmed glasses.

After briefly exchanging glances with Huhne, Pryce made some notes, but looked down throughout much of the short hearing.
Huhne, wearing a mauve tie with white shirt and navy suit, spoke only to confirm his name.
The pair left the bullet-proof glass-encased dock released on unconditional bail.
Perverting the course of justice carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.
The allegations only emerged after Huhne ended his 26-year marriage in June 20120 and confirmed he had been having a long-term affair with media adviser Ms Trimingham, a former press officer for the BBC’s Top Of The Pops, for more than a year.
In a statement released at the time, he said: ‘I am in a serious relationship with Carina Trimingham and I am separating from my wife.’
The scandal had echoes of former Labour Foreign Secretary Robin Cook’s affair with his secretary Gaynor Regan, which was exposed in 1997, months after Tony Blair came to power.
Labour officials forced Mr Cook to choose immediately between wife Margaret and Ms Regan to limit the public relations damage to the Government. Like Mr Cook, Huhne chose his mistress.
