One of the most interesting cars at this year’s Detroit Auto Show was the Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrid. It’s interesting not only because it’s a plug-in, but also because it represents the first step in a longer journey; GM is taking the Voltec powertrain that was first developed for the Chevrolet Volt (which, by the way, topped Consumer Reports’ satisfaction survey), and putting it into other models. I wouldn’t be surprised if, over time, the Voltec system found its way not only in luxury cars like the ELR, but in family sedans, SUVs, minivans, pickup trucks, etc.
Back to the Cadillac ELR plug-in. GM has a short video interview with Tim Kozub, the man in charge of the car’s design. It’s a bit fluffly and doesn’t go very in depth, but it does show a few more details on the car and there’s a quick shot that shows how the T-shaped battery pack sits at the center of the car (see the pic above).
What will be interesting to know is the release date, the EPA’s fuel economy rating, and the price, but that will only come later.
