Apparently Coca-Cola is involved in the anti-obesity industry; specifically from the perspective of influencing and funding shifting the blame to something other than their product.

The organization created by Coca-Cola is called Global Energy Balance Network (GEBN) which takes the stance that weight-conscious Americans are obsessed with how much they eat and drink while not considering the role of exercise; or lack thereof.

GEBN maintains that there is “strong evidence” that exercise, not reducing caloric intake, is the secret to weighing less. To back up this claim, the group provides research papers that contain the revelation: “The publication of this article was supported by The Coca-Cola Company.”

On the website, GEBN says: “‘Eat less’ has never been a message that’s been effective. The message should be ‘Move more and eat smarter.’ ”

And backing up this concept, members of the organization recently posted this: “The media tends to blame the obesity epidemic on our poor eating habits. But are those French fries really the culprit? Dr. Steve Blair explains that you shouldn’t believe everything you see on TV.”

Steven Blair, exercise scientist for GEBN recently said : ““Most of the focus in the popular media and in the scientific press is, ‘Oh they’re eating too much, eating too much, eating too much’ — blaming fast food, blaming sugary drinks and so on. And there’s really virtually no compelling evidence that that, in fact, is the cause.”

GEBN received $1.5 million in 2014 of seed money to start the non-profit. Going back to 2008, Coca-Cola added $4 million in funding projects led by:

Dr. Steven Blair , a professor at the University of South Carolina Arnold School of Public Health whose research over the past 25 years has formed much of the basis of federal guidelines on physical activity
Gregory A. Hand , dean of the West Virginia University Arnold School of Public Health

According to GEBN’s website , their organization was registered to Coca-Cola headquarters and the corporation is listed as the site’s administrator.

GEBN’s president happens to be James Hill, professor for the University Of Colorado School Of Medicine; who explained that Coca-Cola registered their website because no one on their staff knew how to do it themselves. Hill maintains that his organization “is running the show”, not Coca-Cola.

He is also the co-founder of the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR), a long-term research study on why people lose weight, and served on boards of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Earlier this year, Hill wrote in an op-ed piece that physical inactivity is the problem that causes obesity and the GEBN was created to interject this fact into the public sphere so to “balance” the “energy equation”.

At the bottom of this editorial, it was disclosed that Coca-Cola provided an “unrestricted education gift” in exchange for this information.

More funding from Coca-Cola provided to GEBN was explained by Hill as money accrued because the university would not invest in his organization. In addition to Coca-Cola, Hill disclosed that General Mills had promised to financially support the group, but has not followed through with that commitment.

Rhona Applebaum, chief science officer and vice president for Coca-Cola took to Twitter to announce the soda giant and Blair’s involvement with GEBN.

Applebaum pointed to the long-standing history of her company partnering “with some of the foremost experts in the fields of nutrition and physical activity. It’s important to us that the researchers we work with share their own views and scientific findings, regardless of the outcome, and are transparent and open about our funding.”

In addition, GEBN promoted exercise and physical activity as a solution to obesity as opposed to drinking less soda on Facebook and other social media sites .

Coca-Cola is in good company as a corporation that funds research into obesity that steers the public away from perceiving their product as the cause of the problem. And this is not their first attempt as doing so.

• They donated millions to Exercise is Medicine to build fitness centers in 100+ schools in the US
• They donated $3 million to fund fitness programs in 60 community centers in Chicago after the city proposed a soda tax

Coca-Cola also paid out money to Kraft Foods, McDonalds, PepsiCo and Hershey’s for presenting soda as a healthy snack.

In 2013, Coca-Cola, PepsiCo and the American Beverage Association (ABA) funded a study published in a major science journal that conveniently discovered there is no connection between sugary drinks and weight gain.

Earlier this month, the Pennington Biomedical Research Center (PBRC) published a study that was “funding by the Coca-Cola Company” which claimed in children a lack of physical activity “is the biggest predictor of childhood obesity around the world.”
