On Friday US President Donald Trump sparked international concerns when he told reporters that the United States has “many options for Venezuela, including a possible military option if necessary”.

Trump’s statement came as Venezuela is edging ever closer to the brink of a possible civil war as the potential and will to use violence has been demonstrated by the socialist PSUV regime as well as a cohort of opposition parties, other civil society organizations, as well as elements within the country’s military, police and intelligence forces.

However, even though Colombia does not recognize the recent election of the Constituent Assembly that superseded the National Assembly where the Roundtable of Democratic Unity (MUD) coalition held an absolute majority, Colombia swiftly distanced itself from Trump’s militarism. In a statement on Saturday, the Colombian Foreign Ministry distanced itself from any foreign military intervention in neighboring Venezuela, saying:

We reject military measures and the use of force in the international system. All measures must be taken in respect of the sovereignty of Venezuela through peaceful solutions. … Despite the current difficulties in achieving a peaceful and negotiated solution, we continue to believe that this is the right way to find long-term solutions for the Venezuelan people. In this context and in accordance with the principles and purposes of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, we have called upon the Secretary-General of the United Nations to use the mechanisms for peaceful settlement of disputes and good offices to create the conditions required for a negotiation that puts an end to the crisis of democratic rupture in Venezuela.

The only scenario that could lead to a Colombian military intervention is one in which its own national security and sovereignty are being threatened. Last week Colombia’s Foreign Minister said Colombia would use force if its sovereignty is violated. However, even though the statement was misconstrued in a number of propaganda outlets, it was a reference to the risk posed by a destabilization of Venezuela and the risk posed by cross-border activities of Colombian neo-paramilitaries and drug cartels, and to a much lesser degree the leftist ELN which is in peace negotiations with the government.
