Rep. Jason Chaffetz said on Thursday that he would ask the FBI to investigate Hillary Clinton’s sworn testimony before Congress in which she falsely said that she did not send or received classified information via email.
During tense questioning, the chair of the House Oversight Committee asked Comey, “Did Hillary Clinton lie?”
“To the FBI,” Comey replied, “We have no basis to conclude she lied to the FBI.”
“Did she lie to the public?” Chaffetz asked.
“That’s a question I’m not qualified to answer. I can speak about what she said to the FBI,” Comey replied.
“Did Hillary Clinton lie under oath?” Chaffetz followed up. “Not to the FBI,” Comey said. “Not in a case we’re working.”
Then referring to Clinton’s sworn testimony before the House Benghazi Committee from October 2015, Chaffetz asked, “Did you review the documents where Congressman Jim Jordan asked her specifically and she said, quote, ‘There was nothing marked classified on my e-mails, either sent or received,’ end quote?”
“I don’t remember reviewing that particular testimony,” Comey replied. “I’m aware of that being said, though.”
“Did the FBI investigate her statements under oath on this topic?” Chaffetz asked.
“Not to my knowledge. I don’t think there has been a referral from Congress,” Comey replied.
“Do you need a referral from Congress to investigate her statements under oath?” Chaffetz followed up.
“Sure do,” Comey answered. “You’ll have one. You’ll have one in the next few hours,” Chaffetz said.
In a statement provided to The Daily Caller on Tuesday, Rep. Jordan said, “Once again the politically connected get to play by a different set of rules than everyday Americans. Despite her statements to the contrary, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton sent and received Top Secret classified information through her unclassified email server, and yet the FBI sees no case. This is a travesty, and just another reason why Americans feel like the game is rigged against them.”
According to Comey, the investigation into Clinton’s server discovered 110 emails that were classified at the time of sending.
