Alaa Abdel Fattah served three and a half years in prison and he is now to spend another one and a half year more, followed by a five year period of probation. He also has to pay a fine of EGP 100,000. In Egypt the activist’s case has been widely publicize as “the Shura Council events”.

All other defendants in this case, with the exception of Alaa, were released after they received a presidential pardon from President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. Abdel Fattah was charged with organizing a demonstration without a license before the Shura Council in November 2013, provoking riots, assaulting police officers, blocking roads, gathering public property.

Abdel (Abd El) Fattah is also facing allegations of “insulting the judiciary” in a case that will come to trial in December. If found guilty the sentence can be anything starting from a fine to spending more years in prison. Human rights group have called for the release of Alaa Abdel Fattah in solidarity with all Egyptian political prisoner. Abdel Fattah, a software engineer, blogger and activist, is a prominent figure in the 25 January 2011 revolution toppling the regime of Hosni Mubarak.

It is worth noting that the charges for “insulting the judiciary” could violate human rights laws according to which insulting a person or other party must never lead to criminal prosecution even if it is a person in power who allegedly has been insulted.
