Beijing has said it “may” allow an open vote in Hong Kong when the
chief executive election comes around again in five years time.
This year, unlike in the four previous elections under Chinese rule, Beijing
did not anoint its preferred candidate in advance. Instead, China’s leaders
were initially thought to favour Mr Tang, and then appeared to switch sides
as Mr Leung proved far more popular.
Mr Leung worries many of Hong Kong’s powerful tycoons. On Sunday he vowed to
tackle “deep-rooted problems”, including an enormous wealth gap,
and turn the region into a “more righteous and more progressive society”.
