DEFENCE has named combat engineer Corporal Scott Smith, 24, as the soldier killed in Afghanistan on Sunday afternoon.
A member of the Holsworthy-based Special Operations Engineer Regiment , he was born in the Barossa Valley in South Australia.
Corporal Smith is survived by his partner Liv, his parents Katrina Paterson and Murray Smith and his sister Roxanne.

He joined the army in 2006 and was posted to Number 1 Combat Engineer Regiment in Darwin before he transferred to special forces and joined the regiment as a search operator in 2008.
Corporal Smith was on his second deployment to Afghanistan when he was killed by a bomb blast during a compound clearance operation.
He had also deployed to the Solomon islands in 2006.

”Corporal Smith was an exceptional soldier who possessed all the qualities and charisma of a great junior leader,” Defence said.
”He is described by his unit as a genuine, honest and dedicated member who was probably one of the best Junior Non-Commissioned Officers that the unit has seen. His loss will be deeply felt.”
South Australian Premier Jay Weatherill said the death of Corporal Scott Smith in Afghanistan is a poignant loss as more SA diggers prepare to deploy.
”This is a particularly poignant loss, coming as some 450 soldiers from South Australia prepare to deploy to Afghanistan,” Premier Weatherill said in a statement today.
“It also comes just weeks before Remembrance Day, the day we pause to remember all those who have given their lives for us.

“Our thoughts are with Corporal Smith’s family, friends and those serving alongside him.”
Corporal Smith has been awarded the following honours and awards:
– Australian Active Service Medal with clasp International Coalition Against Terrorism,

– Australian Service Medal with Clasp Solomons 2,
– Australian Service Medal with Clasp – Counter Terrorism / Special Recovery,
– Australian Defence Medal,
– NATO International Stabilisation Assistance Force Medal with Multi-Tour Indicator 2,
– Army Soldiers Medallion,
– Army Combat Badge,
– Returned from Active Service Badge.
During Corporal Smith’s service in the Australian Army he was deployed on the following operations:
– Operation ANODE (Solomon Islands) – November 2006 – December 2006,
– Operation SLIPPER (Afghanistan) – February 2010 – July 2010,
– Operation NORWICH (Australia) – November 2011,
– Operation SLIPPER (Afghanistan) – July 2012 – October 2012.
