Dempsey becomes new Police Minister after Gibson resigns

Mr Dempsey, a former policeman, will replace Member for Gympie David Gibson who resigned late Monday.

In a statement issued on his Facebook page, Mr Gibson said “It was brought to my attention yesterday (Sunday) that my driver licence was suspended under SPER on the 18 Nov 2011 for 3 months.

“Knowing the high standards that are expected of Ministers I believed I could no longer fulfil the role as Minister for Police and Community Safety and tendered my resignation.”

Premier Newman said in a press conference announcing the new appointment, the job of a minster requires integrity, and the standard set is a high one.

“Ministers of the Crown are people who have been put into positions of great authority.

“You can’t ‘test out’ ministers, you’ve got to have people who actually inherently know what the right thing is to do. We rely on these people to do the right job. They have got to have integrity and character.

“If this had occurred with any other minister; I’m not talking about a speeding fine, I’m talking about a chain of events that do not meet community standards, then yes, any minister would have gone.”

Political commentator Professor Scott Prasser said he believes the Premier has acted too quickly.

“One of the advantages of new government is that you can start to set some criteria.

“I understand that the Premier wants to send a signal out to voters and his ministry that he expects high standards, but we’ve also go to put it into the realms of political realities.

“You’ve got have your ministry supporting you, and if you’ve got your ministry scared or unwilling to challenge you… then that can create some very inappropriate behaviour inside the ministry.”
