“The best way to resolve the Syrian issue is for the opposition to reach an agreement with the government,” Salehi said on Wednesday.

The Iranian foreign minister also reiterated Iran’s readiness to facilitate talks between the Syrian opposition and government.

“We have been in contact with the opposition since last year and we are ready to host their dialogue with the Syrian government,” Salehi added.

On July 16, Salehi first voiced Iran’s preparedness to facilitate dialogue between the Syrian government and opposition groups by hosting a meeting between the two sides in Tehran.

“We believe that the crisis in Syria should be solved through a Syria-Syria solution and nothing should be imposed from outside and no government should be imposed [on Syrians] from outside,” he added.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since mid-March 2011. Many people, including large numbers of security forces, have been killed in the turmoil.

While the West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
