A political analyst says voices of dissent coming from the Saudi royal family are a cover for the real power struggle in the kingdom.
“Of course these are based on real agony by the princesses and real complaints but I believe that they come at this moment as a cover for real power struggle in Saudi Arabia,” Jamal Wakim, from the Lebanese International University, told Press TV.
He added that Saudi King Abdullah had made several steps to marginalize the “seven Sudairi brothers” and their sons who have been holding real power in the kingdom for decades.
He believed that some Saudi princes are using such grievances to discredit King Abdullah and at the same time to drive a wedge between the King and the possibility of coming up with a certain deal with Iran.
“I believe that we have a real power struggle in Saudi Arabia and it might outburst into a public disorder if it goes out of control,” Wakim said.
The commentator’s remark came after Prince Khalid Bin Farhan al-Saud praised Princess Sahar and her three sisters, who are under house arrest in the city of Jeddah, for their support for the uprising by “the oppressed people of the city of Qatif” in Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
Prince Farhan defected from the royal family in July 2013, saying that the Saudi regime “does not stand by God’s rules.”
In a video message posted on YouTube, Saudi King Abdullah’s eldest daughter, Sahar, called on people in the kingdom to continue their anti-regime demonstrations.
Protests against the Al Saud family have intensified since November 2011, when security forces opened fire on protesters in Qatif in Eastern Province, killing five people and leaving scores injured.
Activists say there are over 30,000 political prisoners in Saudi Arabia.
