Dozens of bodies of would-be migrants have been found in a fishing boat making its way to Italy.
According to a statement, released by the Italian Navy on Monday, some 30 corpses were discovered in the boat in the Canal of Sicily on Sunday.
The vessel, which was carrying about 600 migrants, has reportedly been towed to the port of Pozzallo, situated on the southern tip of Sicily.
The victims had apparently died of asphyxiation as they were crammed into a compartment below the boat decks.
In another development on Sunday, Italian authorities announced that more than 1,600 migrants were rescued by the navy and coast guards over the weekend, bringing the total number of migrants arriving on Italian shores in 2014 to above 60,000.
Over the past years, Italy has been the scene of a number of tragedies for African migrants in crowded boats who are seeking refuge in Europe.
In October 2013, more than 300 migrants, mostly from Eritrea and Somalia, were killed after their boat capsized off Lampedusa, located halfway between Sicily and Tunisia.
Earlier in February, Italy’s deputy Interior Minister, Filippo Bubbico, said the number of refugees landing in Italy rose by almost ten times in a one-year period.
According to figures by immigration charities, during the past two decades, an estimated 17,000 to 20,000 migrants have died at sea trying to reach Europe as a result of traveling on overcrowded fishing vessels or rubber boats.
