A TRUCK driver has survived falling nearly 20 metres from his truck as it flipped and nearly tumbled off a major Melbourne freeway in a dramatic peak hour crash.

The man’s truck has been secured but still dangles precariously from the Bolte Bridge, part of the busy CityLink tollway.

The road’s inbound lanes have been closed, causing major delays.

Police say the truck had collided with a car on the bridge shortly after 6.30am (AEST) on Friday.

The driver of the truck, believed to be in his 30s, was ejected from the cabin and fell on to Mark Street, which runs below the bridge.

The man was found by a nearby factory worker, who comforted him until an ambulance arrived, Fairfax Radio reports.

He was drifting in and out of consciousness and kept saying he was scared he was going to die.

The driver had suffered serious head and pelvic injuries, an Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said.

He is listed in a critical condition at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The other driver, a woman believed to be in her 20s, suffered minor injuries and has also been taken to hospital.

A CityLink spokeswoman said all inbound lanes were closed at Flemington Road.

“It’s expected to be closed for some hours yet,” she said.
