Guinea says the Ebola outbreak is under control, but the death toll could rise because sick patients remain in hospital.
During a trip to Geneva, home to the World Health Organization (WHO), Guinea’s President Alpha Conda said on Wednesday that the Ebola virus has so far killed 74 people in the African country.
“For the moment the situation is well in hand, and we touch wood that there won’t be any new cases,” Conde told reporters.
He added that no new cases of Ebola were recorded in recent days.
“There haven’t been any new cases. But of those who remain in quarantine, there certainly will be some who will die,” he said.
Guinea’s Health Ministry officials said on Tuesday that there had been 121 confirmed cases of Ebola since January.
They said four people were being treated in the capital Conakry, and six others in Gueckedou, in the southern part of the country.
There is currently no known cure for Ebola, whose symptoms are diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding.
The virus spreads through direct contact with blood, feces and sweat. It can also be spread through sexual contact or the unprotected handling of contaminated corpses.
Discovered in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976, Ebola remains one of the world’s most virulent diseases that kills between 25 to 90 percent of those who fall sick.
The WHO has not announced any travel restrictions for Guinea, however, some other countries in the region are bracing against the epidemic.
