Egypt’s anti-coup alliance demands Saudi Arabia to stop endorsing interim leaders in Cairo and respect the will of the Egyptian people.
In a statement released on Monday, the alliance led by the Muslim Brotherhood denounced the Saudi Arabian regime’s support of “the bloody, treacherous coup”.
The alliance, also known as the National Coalition to Support Legitimacy, said that the coup only served the interests of the Zionist enemy.
This comes after Saudi Arabia’s state TV reported last week that the kingdom has formally designated the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group.
Riyadh has openly supported Egypt’s military-backed authorities who came to power following president Mohamed Morsi’s ouster.
Egypt banned the Muslim Brotherhood in December. The ban came five months after the army removed the first democratically-elected president, Mohamed Morsi.
The UN Human Rights Council has expressed concern over the Egyptian security forces’ crackdown on and killing of peaceful anti-government protesters.
Amnesty International criticized Egyptian authorities for using an “unprecedented scale” of violence against protesters and dealing “a series of damaging blows to human rights.”
According to the UK-based rights group, 1,400 people have been killed in the political violence since Mohamed Morsi’s ouster in July last year, “most of them due to excessive force used by security forces.”
Anti-government demonstrators have been holding rallies almost on a daily basis, since the army toppled Morsi. The demonstrators demand that Morsi be reinstated.
