Egypt detects first case of MERS virus

The Egyptian authorities say they have detected the first case of the potentially deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV).

Media reports said on Saturday that a 27-year-old male patient at a Cairo hospital, who recently arrived from Saudi Arabia, tested positive for the SARS-like virus.

The virus was first detected in Saudi Arabia and has already claimed 92 lives in the country.

Saudi authorities say they have recently discovered 14 more cases in the monarchy, bringing the total number to 313 since the outbreak of the virus.

At least four doctors reportedly resigned after refusing to visit MERS patients at King Fahd Hospital in the western city of Jeddah last week.

MERS is a cousin of SARS. The virus first emerged in the Middle East, and was discovered in September 2012 in a Qatari man who had traveled to Saudi Arabia.

The virus, which causes coughing, fever and pneumonia, does not appear to be as contagious as SARS, which killed some 800 people in a 2003 epidemic.

In addition to Saudi Arabia, MERS has been reported in the Persian Gulf countries, France, Germany, Italy, Tunisia and Britain.

While no travel restrictions have been announced, the World Health Organization has urged health authorities across the world to maintain vigilance.

The organization said on April 17 that it had been informed of 243 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection across the world, including 93 deaths.
