More than 60 supporters of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood have received lengthy jail terms as crackdown on the movement continues.
A court in Minya handed lengthy sentences to dozens of supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi on Sunday.
Judicial sources say the Morsi supporters were given jail terms from five to 15 years over their role in protests in the Nile valley province.
This is the latest in an ongoing government crackdown on opponents of the military-backed government, especially supporters of Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood movement.
Meanwhile, another court has handed more than ten Brotherhood’s supporters up to 88 years in prison over violent protests.
Egypt judiciary sentenced nearly 530 Morsi supporters to death last month in the largest mass death sentencing in the modern history of the country.
This is while the rulings have been widely slammed by rights groups and numerous nationwide protests have been held to demand the release of those detained during protests.
Figures show Egypt’s military-backed government has jailed nearly 16,000 people over the past few months.
The Muslim Brotherhood has been declared a “terrorist” organization by Egyptian interim authorities. Commentators say the labeling justifies punishment of any public show of support for the group.
Despite Cairo’s crackdown, the Brotherhood says the group remains committed to peaceful resistance against the military-installed interim government.
Rights group Amnesty International says at least 1,400 people have been killed in the political violence since Morsi’s ouster on July 3, 2013, “most of them due to excessive force used by security forces.”
