Egypt receives UNSC non-permanent seat of North Africa Friday

TCP : Egypt’s UN Permanent representative Ambassador Amr Abu Atta will participate in all United Nations Security Council (UNSC) sessions as of Friday after the country has received its UNSC non-permanent seat of North Africa for 2016-2017 term, Youm7 reported.

UN Security Council, Photo by Hu TotyaOn Oct. 15, Egypt was officially elected to occupy the seat after garnering 179 out of 193 votes of the UNGA member states; it was the only candidate in its regional block.

“The resolution of conflicts in the African continent in order to strengthen peace and security tops Egypt’s agenda,” Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abu Zeid was quoted by Youm7.

Egypt has previously held the non-permanent membership of the UNSC four times since the organization was founded in 1945.

Earlier this month, Egypt was also elected to head the Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) of the United Nations Security Council.
