Spokesman for the Pakistani Foreign Ministry Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said Saturday that Morsi would arrive in Islamabad on March 18 at the head of a high-ranking delegation.
“This visit is being seen as a watershed and a landmark in the traditional and friendly relations between the two large and important Muslim countries,” said the spokesman.
The last Egyptian president to visit Pakistan was Gamal Abdel Nasser in the 1960s.
Morsi is reportedly expected to sign several agreements with his Pakistani counterpart Asif Ali Zardari Zardari during his one-day visit.
“President Morsi’s decision to choose Pakistan as the first South Asian country for a bilateral visit manifests Egypt’s desire to add a new chapter to its bilateral ties with Pakistan,” Chaudhry added.
According to Egyptian media, Morsi is also due to travel to India following his visit to Pakistan. The Egyptian leader will reportedly discuss a possible increase in Indian investment and trade in Egypt.
