Egyptians hold anti-government rallies

Egyptians have held protest rallies against new President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in the country’s capital, Cairo.

The Thursday rallies were reportedly organized by the Muslim Brotherhood movement. During the rallies, demonstrators chanted slogans against the government as well as the ouster of Egypt’s freely-elected President Mohamed Morsi, in whose toppling al-Sisi played a leading role.

A similar protest rally was also held by the female students of Egypt’s Al-Azhar University.

The religious institution has been a frequent scene of anti-government demonstrations since Morsi’s ouster in July 2013, often leading to violent clashes between security forces and students.

Earlier, the military-installed interim authorities in Egypt issued a decree, allowing security forces to enter college campuses and granting university administrators the authority to expel any protesting students.

The development comes as a Cairo court on Monday sentenced 82 students – described as Morsi supporters – to five years in prison and fines of LE100,000 for “illegal protesting.”

Meanwhile, Egyptian forces stormed student dormitories at Al-Azhar University in Cairo last Friday to suppress the unrest caused by protesting students that opposed the military-led government and Morsi’s ouster.

The on-campus protests in Egypt have often turned violent, with hundreds of students arrested and several killed since the beginning of the academic year last September.
