U.S. Congressman Darrel Issa said Sunday that Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi would be welcomed by the U.S. administration if he decides to visit Washington.
Issa, who leads the Congress’ House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, told reporters in Cairo following a meeting with al-Sisi that his congressional delegation’s visit came to address concerns over “terrorist groups” in the region such as the ISIL, which has recently taken over parts of Iraq.
He went on to assert that Egypt remains a “strong ally” to the United States and that it can reduce the “threat of terrorism” in the region.
Relations between Egypt and the U.S. administration soured shortly after the Egyptian military moved to oust elected president Mohamed Morsi in July 2013.
The U.S. then withheld part of its military and financial aid to Egypt, including the delivery of some important arms for the Egyptian army.
