A pit bull is recovering after being shot twice and left for dead in the woods for four days.
Elijah, a three-year-old dog, was shot in the hind quarters and between the shoulder blades.
Animal rescue workers found the pup, who had been struggling to survive alone, in a rural area in Nebraska.

He is now recovering at the Noah’s Hope Animal Rescue in Sioux City, Iowa.
Brenda Iwen, co-founder of the animal rescue group, described Elijah’s condition when the dog was rescued on March 29 as frightful.

She told Fox44.com: ‘He could walk, but you know, he was just in real bad shape.’
She went on to say: ‘Full of infection, maggots, it was just horrible, horrible.’
Once rescued, the dog had to go through several surgeries because of his wounds.
Although the animal was shot, the person responsible for the dog’s damage will not face any criminal charges.
In Nebraska, it is not illegal to shot a dog in rural areas.
But Iwen stressed during an interview with the local Fox television station that owners should explore more humane ways of putting down pets, such as euthanasia.
As for Elijah, the pooch still has to see the veterinarian once more to get stitches removed.
Elijah is expected to recover
He will be placed with a foster family for a week.
The animal rescue group is searching for a permanent home for Elijah.
