Elon Musk has gathered a few of his super friends to save humanity from a potential robopocalypse by creating a non-profit company that will “advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return.”

This appears to be a battle of good versus evil; wherein Musk’s corporation will create the good artificial intelligence and Google will develop the killer robots.

Tech executives Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn and Peter Thiel, co-founder of PayPal joined Musk and venture capitalist Sam Altman to incorporate OpenAI with the mission premise that “artificial intelligence systems are coming, and we’d like to share the development of that technology amongst everyone, not just Google’s shareholders.”

Altman revealed that this altruistic plan to save the world from killer robots is really about starting the AI revolution in order to control the future of the technology – avoiding the Terminator movie scenario.

He said: “Just like humans protect against Dr. Evil by the fact that most humans are good, and the collective force of humanity can contain the bad elements, we think it’s far more likely that many, many AIs, will work to stop the occasional bad actors than the idea that there is a single AI a billion times more powerful than anything else. If that one thing goes off the rails or if Dr. Evil gets that one thing and there is nothing to counteract it, then we’re really in a bad place.”

This is actually the second company Musk has started in order to protect humanity from the killer robots. Back in July of 2015, he gave $10 million to Max Tegmark’s Future of Life Institute (FLI) to investigate the viable risk that artificial intelligence will become sentient killers.

Speaking of FLI, Musk said : “Here are all these leading AI researchers saying that AI safety is important. I agree with them, so I’m today committing $10M to support research aimed at keeping AI beneficial for humanity.”

Tegmark is a professor of physics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the brains behind that “ultimate ensemble theory of everything” which supposes that “all structures that exist mathematically exist also physically” – with no free parameters.

This theory holds that should a structure be complex enough to contain self-aware substructures (SASs), those SASs would be subjectively perceive themselves as existing in a physical “real” world as is explained in depth in Tegmark’s book, “Our Mathematical Universe”.

Incorporating this theory into the investigation into artificial intelligence’s propensity toward sentience, Tegmark and FLI have opened the project to scientists researching the benefits of robotic intelligence.

Tegmark believes that as research into artificial intelligence continues, their “impact on society is likely to increase” as its still largely unknown potentials in healthcare and economics become more and more apparent.
