Elon Musk’s “Ancient Aliens” Twittersphere Controversy Continues

The modern world is filled with self-appointed experts who investigate various events, legends and historical texts looking for evidence of historic contact between humans and extraterrestrial life forms . The History Channel hit show “ Ancient Aliens explores the controversial theory that extraterrestrials have been visiting earth for millions of years since the time of the dinosaurs right through to ancient Egypt . But Elon Musk’s ancient aliens comment on Twitter is a notable case of how far one comment can go.

Elon Musk, the famous engineer, industrial designer, technology entrepreneur and philanthropist who runs SpaceX, recently set the Twittersphere on fire when he posted in “apparent” support of conspiracy theorists who claim aliens were involved in the building of the stone monuments and tombs of ancient Egypt. His Twitter comment, “Aliens built the pyramids obv”, was retweeted more than 84,000 times. And while to many of us it is perfectly clear Mr Musk was fooling around, according to the BBC, he outraged Egypt’s international co-operation minister, who spoke up against the apparently outlandish claim. Clearly Musk’s ancient aliens view has set the world on fire.

The Rising Controversy of Ancient Alien Theories

Why Egypt’s Minister of International Co-operation, Rania al-Mashat, responded on Twitter to Musk’s ancient aliens comments is anyone’s guess. However, after saying how she followed and admired Mr Musk’s work, she reminded him that the tombs of the builders were discovered in the 1990s and serve as “definitive evidence”, that Egypt’s magnificent tombs were built by ancient Egyptians, for the pharaohs of Egypt.

In an Egypt Today article the Egyptian archaeologist Zahi Hawass also responded to Mr Musk’s tweet in a short Arabic video accusing the tech mogul of suffering a “complete hallucination.” Zahi stated the tombs of the pyramid builders tells everyone that the builders of the pyramids were Egyptians “and they were not slaves.” The archaeologist’s retort to Musk’s ancient aliens tweet say that to assert aliens built the monuments in Egypt suggests ancient Africans were not capable, and that they had worked in chains for some intergalactic race. The current racially charged Black Lives Matter reality in North America in combination with Musk’s Twitter comment, have placed him in a difficult position.

A Quick Turn for the Space Explorer

Zahi Hawass’s comment instantly put Mr Musk in a very tight corner. Before being branded as an outright racist by an angered Twitter mob, Musk later tweeted a link to a BBC History article discussing the lives of the pyramid builders , saying: ” This BBC article provides a sensible summary for how it was done .” However, Mr Musk could have set fire to Twitter if, rather than posting the down-to-earth BBC link, he had shared a link to a July 26th article in Popular Mechanics which discusses American Senator Harry Reid’s comments on the American government s “Naval Intelligence UFO unit” that he said “deals with classified matters.”

In a June Senate Committee Report , the U.S. Senate authorized appropriations for the fiscal year 2021 for The Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force to reveal “any links that unidentified aerial phenomena have to adversarial foreign governments, and the threat they pose to U.S. military assets and installations.”

We All What to Know: Are There Alien Things In Our Skies?

At the beginning of April 2019 the American Navy confirmed the authenticity of three videos showing “unexplained aerial phenomena”, and they posted the clips on their Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) page . But Senator Marco Rubio, who chairs the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence told a CBS affiliate in Florida that he’s most interested to learn “who s responsible for unidentified aircraft spotted over American military bases” and he added that he hopes the Chinese or Russians or some other adversary haven’t made “some sort of technological leap allowing them to conduct this sort of activity.”

However, while many believe these unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are advanced weapons or surveying technologies controlled by foreign adversaries, in a recent New York Times interview the ex-Senator of Nevada, Harry Reid, who was instrumental in funding the original U.S. UFO search program, said he believes “crashes of objects of unknown origin may have occurred and that retrieved materials should be studied.” And the Senator also said there were reports of “actual materials that the government and the private sector had in their possession.”

Furthermore, in a July 24, 2020 Tweet, Harry Reid said that astrophysicist Eric Davis, who consulted with the Pentagon s original UFO program and now works for the defense contractor Aerospace Corporation , told the New York Times that after he examined “certain materials,” he came to the conclusion that we couldn’t make [them] ourselves.” In fact, Davis briefed a Department of Defense (DOD) agency as recently as March about the retrieval of materials from “off-world vehicles not made on this earth.” In the end, Musk’s ancient aliens comment may have been much more than an insensitive joke as it has sparked so much other dialogue on the subject of extraterrestrials.
