A MAN who fatally shot his wife and himself in their Sydney home had sent a message to his son moments earlier, apologising for “what is to come”, an inquest has heard.
Marina Louise Tuddenham, 46, and Rodney Tuddenham, 55, died of gunshot wounds to the head at their Hornsby home in Sydney’s north some time between the late hours of July 31 or the early hours of August 1, 2011.
Ms Tuddenham’s body was found lying face down on her bed next to one of her cats, which was also fatally shot, while Mr Tuddenham was discovered slumped in a chair in the backyard.
On the opening day of the inquest, Glebe Coroners Court heard Mr Tuddenham had sent three emails to family members apologising for what he was about to do.
In the last email, sent to his then 19-year-old son, he wrote: “I love you and I am sorry about what is to come.”
“Marina has been in pain for a long time and I have helped her end that pain.
“I have also ended my own pain.”
Less than five minutes after sending the email Mr Tuddenham called Hornsby police station telling an officer to “pick up two dead bodies”, Detective Superintendent Conrad Frediani said.
“My wife is dead and I will be dead in two minutes,” Mr Tuddenham reportedly told police.
The inquest heard that the Tuddenhams had been together since 1994 and were estranged but living together at the time of their deaths.
Counsel assisting the coroner Senior Sergeant Sasha Harding said it appeared Mr Tuddenham wasn’t co-operating with his wife’s attempts to secure a divorce.
But Det Supt Frediani, who was in charge of the investigation, said no one in Mr Tuddenham’s family could think of any indication or warning sign before the shooting.
The inquest, which continues before Magistrate Mary Jerram, will investigate issues including the couple’s health and their relationship status.
