Emergency Meeting Called At Buckingham Palace

The Queen’s most senior aides have summoned all staff from royal residences across the country to an ’emergency meeting’  this morning at Buckingham Palace in London.

The entire royal household staff has been ordered to attend sparking rumours that the Queen or Prince Philip may have died.

Staff will be addressed at 10am by the Lord Chamberlain, the most senior officer of the Royal Household, as well as Her Majesty’s right-hand man, Private Secretary Sir Christopher Geidt.

The Telegraph reports:

Sources said the Lord Chamberlain does call meetings from time to time and that it would be wrong to speculate.

Social media immediately went into overdrive, speculating about the death of a senior royal or an abdication.

The Telegraph understands neither scenario is likely, with sources warning there is “no cause for concern” or hysteria.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh  were both in good health Wednesday.

The Queen met with Prime Minister Theresa May at Buckingham Palace while the Duke made a jovial appearance at a London cricket club.

Staff are due to meet at 10am to learn the news first, before it is announced to the public.

“Everyone is on tenterhooks,” one source told the Daily Mail last night. “Although meetings involving the entire royal household are occasionally called, the way this has been done at the eleventh hour is highly unusual and suggests that there is something major to be disseminated.

Update: Buckingham Palace have announced that the Queen’s husband the Duke of Edinburgh is to ‘retire’ from royal duties in the autumn.
