Voters in 21 of the European Union’s 28 member states have begun casting their ballots on the final day of European Parliament elections, which is expected to give anti-EU parties a boost.
Polling stations in the EU states, including Germany, France and Italy opened on Sunday.
About 400 million people across the EU are eligible to take part in the vote to elect their members for 751 parliamentary seats, which are allocated in proportion to each country’s population.
Opinion polls have indicated that EU-skeptics could triple their presence by securing around 100 seats. Surveys have also suggested that mainstream parties, namely the center-right conservatives and the center-left socialists, will hold more than 500 seats in the European Parliament.
However, the turnout is projected to drop to a record low, even lower than the 43 percent in 2009, which is a reflection of growing public frustration with the 28-member bloc.
Government debt, personal debt and huge unemployment rates continue to plague Europe. According to the European Commission, an estimated 24 percent of the entire EU population, or more than 120 million people, are either in poverty or at risk of falling into it.
Preliminary results are expected to be announced after Italy closes its polling stations at 23:00 local time (21:00 GMT). Final results are expected to be released by the end of Monday.
Those EU member states that voted between May 22 and May 24, namely Britain, the Netherlands, Ireland, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Malta and Slovakia, will also release their results after polls close in Italy.
One of the first tasks of the incoming parliament will be to choose a new president for the European Commission, the EU’s executive body.
