NSA monitoring: Facebook, Google & Co received millions of dollars.
Large Internet companies such as Microsoft, Google, Facebook and Yahoo have apparently received millions of dollars for their technical cooperation with the American intelligence service – the NSA (National Security Agency). According to a new report by The Guardian.
The National Security Agency (NSA) is certainly the largest of the intelligence agencies in the United States in regards of their available budget and personnel and became a topic recently due to the leaks of the alleged whistleblower, Edward Snowden. The keywords are e.g. PRISM and XKeyscore.
The National Security Agency (NSA) operates under the jurisdiction of the US Department of Defence and has to report (in general) everything to the American Director of National Intelligence, which analogous implies that the US President Barack Obama as well as the other parts of the American administration in Washington knew about all the monitoring and observation programs by the NSA.
The British newspaper “The Guardian” publishes reports on details of secret documents that were leaked to them by the alleged whistleblower Edward Snowden for nearly three months now.
As a result, it was already known that virtually all large U.S. internet platforms and portals have allowed the access on their interfaces and user data by the NSA and the large internet companies and portals in the United States probably still allow the NSA to access their data it in parts. Of course, the official version says this is needed in order to fight against the international terrorism. As usual.
The now published documents by “The Guardian” confirm that the NSA (National Security Agency) has asked Google, Facebook, Microsoft and Co. after a court decision to technically rectify their platforms online so that the NSA is able to safely make a difference between U.S. citizens and foreign nationals in their spying of them on these internet platforms in order to meet the laws in the United States.
The therefore resulting additional costs for the “providers of PRISM” were (allegedly) reimbursed from the intelligence coffers.
Of course, it is particularly exciting what the large internet companies such as Google, Facebook and Microsoft said in response to the new details of the reports by “The Guardian”.
For example, Yahoo gave this response on the new details on the NSA spying programs by Edward Snowden, published by “The Guardian”:
“The federal law requires the U.S. government to reimburse the costs that the internet providers (ISPs) have to pay for the legal actions, which were ordered by the U.S. government. We have applied for a refund in accordance with this law.”
However, Facebook replied to these new details that they have “never received any compensation in connection with data requests from the government.” But the question remains – who still believes the statements of the guys at Facebook?
Further, the statement by Google was a bit more generally and the guys at Google pointed out that they expect decisions by which they could publish more details on the data requests by the U.S. administration in Washington. This will help “to dispel the wild allegations” by the press” in direction of Google.
At Microsoft, they said finally, that they simply complied requests for help because the requests for help “were legally placed” and “not because the work was reimbursed.” The guys in Redmond, Microsoft, further stated that they are only able to publish further details on the data requests of the U.S. administration when there is an official permission for them to do so. Earlier reports suggest a very close collaboration between Microsoft and the NSA.
