On Wednesday, European Commission spokesman in Spain, Miguel Puente, was part of the team of six experts, who are responsible to check the legality of Spanish controls and investigate allegations of smuggling at the crossing.
Puente talked about the queues at the border check on Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation’s radio program, saying “It’s not a PR exercise, this is the real thing.”
He is to write “a technical, objective report” on the team’s findings that will indicate what action the Commission needs to do with regard to both Spanish and Gibraltarian sides.
“The aim of the mission is to collect first-hand information on site from both sides and exchange impressions face to face with those responsible for the border,” he said.
“This is very useful and necessary in order to then carry out an analysis and then reach some conclusions.”
The investigation comes after British Prime Minister David Cameron urged the Commission to send a team to monitor, on August 15.
Tensions between Spain and Gibraltar flared up in July when the Rock’s authorities announced plan for creating an artificial reef for fish and boats began dumping concrete blocks into the sea. On other side of the border, Spanish authorities said the reef would block its fishing boats.
Gibraltar was occupied by Britain in 1713 and has been since a bone of contention between Madrid and London.
