EU to tighten sanctions on North Korea

A Senior EU diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said on Monday that, “It is a tough package that aims to mark our opposition to the nuclear test” carried out by North Korea.

The new sanctions will reportedly include the implementation of the sanctions approved by the UN Security Council in January as well as EU restrictions on financial dealings and trade sanctions on items potentially linked to Pyongyang’s nuclear program.

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle also said, “We have pushed for enhancing the sanctions,” which is the answer to Pyongyang’s nuclear program.

In addition, North Korean banks will also be banned from founding new branches in the eurozone, while European banks would not be able to open new branches in the Asian country.

On February 13, North Korea said it has successfully conducted its third underground nuclear test.

Pyongyang also said the nuclear test is the country’s “first” action against the US hostility.

The North Korean nuclear test was immediately condemned by the United States, South Korea, Russia, Japan, and many other countries.

North Korea carried out two previous nuclear tests on October 9, 2006 and May 25, 2009.

On January 22, the UN Security Council decided to impose new sanctions on North Korea in an effort to punish the East Asian country for launching a long-range rocket in December 2012.

The Council planned to sanction the country’s “companies, and government agencies, including North Korea’s space agency responsible for the launch, and several individuals.”
