PHOENIX, Arizona: A number of fires are burning in Arizona, California, Colorado and Oregon, sparked by drought and excessive temperatures.
Temperatures are greater than 100 degrees Fahrenheit in many locations. Denver reported three days of triple-digit temperatures, while Tucson, Arizona has registered eight consecutive days of more than 110 degrees.
Officials have said that the extreme temperatures have added to the fire danger.
In Arizona, Coconino County officials have warned residents of several communities near Flagstaff to be prepared to evacuate their homes due to an ongoing 20,000 acre fire.
Authorities also blamed strong winds in dry, parched vegetation areas for a significant increase in fires.
The Arizona fire is thought to have been started by lightning.
In Southern California, San Diego County saw fires break out last weekend. To date, 500 acres have been consumed and firefighters have only contained 25 percent of the fire, according to Cal Fire.
In Northern California, fires in Shasta County have burned nearly 1,000 acres and is 50 percent contained.
In Colorado, fires have consumed more than 5,000 acres, primarily on federal land in Rio Blanco County.
California fires have been aided by 40 mph winds, said officials.
Meanwhile, in southern Oregon the National Weather Service has issued red-flag warnings as the hot and dry conditions could result in fires.
