Mastercard will be allowing customers to use selfie photos, along with fingerprints as alternatives to passwords. This extends to online payments and ID verification.

Whenever further authentication is necessary, the customer simply has to “look at their phone’s camera or use its fingerprint sensor rather than be told to type in selected letters from their password” and if the customer wants to use a selfie, “they just hold up a photo”.

At the Mobile World Congress (MWC) tech show, Mastercard revealed that this new selfie photo ID would be used in countries such as:

• Canada
• US
• Norway
• UK
• Netherlands
• Sweden
• Spain
• Italy
• France
• Denmark
• Germany
• Finland
• Switzerland
• Belgium

The credit card giant tested this technology and 92% of respondents “preferred the new system to passwords”.

Back in July of 2015, Mastercard announced they would implement user’s ability to use selfies as authorization for transactions utilizing facial recognition for online purchases.

This method is exepcted replace passwords and fingerprint identification as the initial testing of the software will begin in the fall of 2015.

The user would simply hold up their smartphone and download a picture of themselves to Mastercard who would use this image to authenticate their future purchases.

Ajay Bhalla, president of enterprise safety and security, said that Millennials who are “into selfies” will “find it cool” and embrace the technology.

In the future, Mastercard envisions biometric scanning and voice recognition combined with wristbands that can authenticate the purchaser using a cardiac rhythm as the trend to follow.

Nymi has collaborated with Mastercard on their wristband wearable tracker to implement the unique heartbeat of the user as an authentication for purchases.

The credit card giant has teamed up with 2 major banks and all major smartphone manufacturers, including:

• Apple
• Blackberry
