‘The sweetener’s bad reputation in recent years had led the association to candy-coat the product’s image by submitting an application to the FDA in 2010 to rename their product as a “sugar.”
The association been running a marketing campaign to explain that HFCS is actually a form of sugar and has the same nutritional value as table sugar that people are familiar with.
“Use of the term ‘sugar’ to describe HFCS, a product that is a syrup, would not accurately identify or describe the basic nature of the food or its characterizing properties,” said Michael Landa, director of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.’
