President of the South American country congratulated Hollande for his “strong win” over center-right Sarkozy in the recent presidential election and said that her government has carefully followed his anti-austerity platform.
“We hope he [Francois Hollande] could work and coordinate with other members of the EU and the G20; things we have long been saying must be don,.” stated Argentine President, Christina Fernandez.
On the other hand, the newly elected French President Francois Hollande stressed his enthusiasm to preserve close relations with Latin American countries, adding that Buenos Aires and Paris both have common objectives in terms of growth.
Center-leftist president of Argentina has frequently questioned EU’s method of dealing with its debt crisis, considering it as a “medicine that kills the patient”; similarly Hollande’s statement that austerity “can no longer be the only option” is considered to be challenging Germany’s policy to tackle the financial crisis.
“What goes on in France depends on France, but also on Germany. Without it, it is very difficult to take seriously any strategic decision concerning Europe and above all the Euro’s future” said Jorge Castro, expert on international affairs.
Many other Latin American countries such as Hugo Chavez, have also welcomed Hollande’s victory over pro-austerity Sarkozy and his “opportunity” to change Europe’s course.
Fernandez is also expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin on the sidelines of the forthcoming G20 meeting in Mexico on June 18-19.
