Four men wanted over bottle bashing in Clayton

UPDATE 10.45am: A VICIOUS assault on a man who was smashed with a beer bottle then bashed on the ground appears to be random, police say.

The 30-year-old man was walking along Haughton Rd, Clayton, about 10.45pm on Sunday when he was hit from behind with the empty bottle.

After he turned around, four men allegedly pushed him to the ground and continued to assault him.

Two vehicles stopped, prompting the attackers to flee, and drove off.

The man managed to walk to Clayton train station where a taxi driver rendered assistance and took him to the Monash Medical Centre with serious head injuries.

Det-Sgt Tom Arnot, of Monash CIU, said it was unclear if the attack was alcohol-fuelled.

“It’s certainly a random and vicious attack on a person which is going about his business,” Det-Sgt Arnot said.

“There was no warning or preceding altercations or interactions with anyone. The victim didn’t hear his assailants coming from behind and it looks like he’s just been beset upon.”

Det-Sgt Arnot said police didn’t believe the attackers were linked to a gang or responsible for any other assaults in the area.

“It could well have had the potential to escalate, could have been worse but for (the cars’) intervention,” he said.

“Fortunately, in this instance, the victim will recover, although he’s quite shaken by the incident and he has had significant lacerations caused to his scalp.”

Investigators would like to speak to four men of Asian appearance, believed 18 to 22 years old.

The group may have been wearing hooded jumpers and jeans.

Police would like to speak to the occupants of the cars that drove past during the incident, including a red, new model Toyota sedan.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or who has further information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or visit www.crimestoppers.com.au.
