Sheriff David Clarke made an appearance on Fox News to speak out against Black Lives Matter (BLM), calling them a “domestic hate group” and comparing this movement to “radical Islam”.
In his op-ed piece published by the right-wing news outlet, Clarke wrote: “Black Lives Matter has no more to do with black issues than Students for a Democratic Society had to do with Democracy. They are means to an end, and they use the black population as sacrifices for their goals. When black celebrities like Beyoncé jump on board I can only wonder what their goals are – more ticket sales? An easy pass from the liberals who control their contracts? It certainly is not to help their community.”
The sheriff called on “white America” to stand up against the attacks in Dallas and Baton Rouge which he believes was perpetrated “by the Black community by the likes of [BLM]”.
In Baton Rouge another ambush on police officers happened over the weekend by a man named Gavin Eugene Long who was a self-described “freedom strategist, mental game coach, nutritionist, author and spiritual advisor”. Apparently Long was selling books about alternative nutrition and New Age religious ideology.
And while Long was not a member of BLM as Fox News would like their audience to believe, he did post a video earlier this month regarding the shooting in Dallas.
In the video, Long said: “You’ve got to fight back. That’s the only way a bully knows to quit.”
The facts regarding Long is that he was a former US Marine who identified as a “sovereign citizen” and belonged to a group called Washitaw Nation, an anti-government organization.
According to author and researcher J.J. MacNab, the group Long belonged to “believes that they are indigenous to the continent and therefore above all federal, state and local laws.”
Long also made a distinction between his natural self and his “legal entity self”.
In general, the sovereign citizen movement adheres to the government is corrupt and out of control narrative and therefore act as if these authorities have no jurisdiction over them. Throughout the country, sovereign citizens also engage in right-wing networks and conspiracy theorists who believe that the US government is illegitimate.
The federal government’s various law enforcement agencies consider these groups domestic terrorists.
President Obama said in a recent weekly address that this country must come together and find a solution to this issue of police brutality and racial bias in policing culture. And all the while right-wing pundits and various other talking heads blame the president for the deadly violence perpetrated against cops.
And at a conference regarding the shooting in Baton Rouge, the president said that “nothing justifies violence against law enforcement” and added: “[Americans to] focus on words and actions that can unite this country rather than divide it further.”
And yet, Sheriff Clarke and his friends in the right-wing continue to use divisive language while simultaneously blaming the president for encouraging more violence against police through the use of BLM – even though nothing from the executive branch backs up these claims.
In fact, it is the right-wing themselves who are dividing the nation based on race and authority.
Journalist Nicholas Confessore explained : “In countless collisions of color and creed, Donald J. Trump’s name evokes an easily understood message of racial hostility… passions aroused and channeled by Mr. Trump take many forms, from earnest if muddled rebellion to deeper and more elaborate bigotry.”
Confessore continued: “[O]n the flatlands of social media, the border between Mr. Trump and white supremacists easily blurs. He has retweeted supportive messages from racist or nationalist Twitter accounts to his nine million followers… In fact, Mr. Trump’s Twitter presence is tightly interwoven with hordes of mostly anonymous accounts trafficking in racist and anti-Semitic attacks. When Little Bird, a social media data mining company, analyzed a week of Mr. Trump’s Twitter activity, it found that almost 30 percent of the accounts Mr. Trump retweeted in turn followed one or more of 50 popular self-identified white nationalist accounts.”
Donald Trump lied at a recent Indiana rally , making an outrageous claim (without proof) that BLM activists held a vigil for Micah Xavier Johnson, the man who shot police officers in Dallas.
Trump told his audience: “The other night you had 11 cities potentially in a blow-up stage. Marches all over the United States — and tough marches. Anger. Hatred. Hatred! Started by a maniac! And some people ask for a moment of silence for him. For the killer!”
