FPÖ Wins, but Postal Votes to Come

Hofer: 51.9%. Van den Bellen: 48.1%. The FPÖ’s Norbert Hofer has won an outright majority of 144,006 votes in the second round of the Austrian presidential elections held today—but the final result will only be known on Monday morning, May 23, when the postal votes are counted.

According to the final official results issued by the Austrian Ministry of Home Affairs, Hofer took 1,937,863 votes, or 51.9 percent of the vote, to the communist/Green Alexander van den Bellen’s 1,793,857 votes, or 48.1 percent.

This means that Hofer leads Van der Bellen by 144,006 votes. There are an estimated 750,000 postal votes yet to be opened and counted on Monday morning.

Should the postal votes be split the same way as the election on Sunday—namely a rough 50/50 split—then Hofer stands a good chance of being declared the winner.

The number of postal votes is a record high, making up 10 percent of the electorate. The turnout was also a record high, of just under 72 percent.

The Austrian state broadcaster, ORF, deliberately put out results claiming that Van der Bellen was either in the lead or exactly level with Hofer, but these estimates were based on guesses of the postal votes as well.

As a result, most of the controlled media repeated these “estimates,” even though the official figures were available for all to see on the Austrian government website.

There is not yet any indication as to how the postal votes will be divided up, but all observers expect them to follow the pattern set by the day’s polling.

Favoring Hofer will be the fact that the city voters—those most likely to favor Van der Bellen—are the least likely to have cast postal ballots.

Hofer also won every federal district except Vorarlberg in the east, and the city of Vienna. Neither of these two defeats was unexpected, as Vorarlberg is Van der Bellen’s home state, and Vienna has so many nonwhite invaders and communists that the FPÖ rarely obtains more than 40 percent of the vote there.

The official results of today’s polling, as announced by the Austrian Ministry of Home Affairs,

In Vorarlberg, Hofer took 43.6 percent of the vote to Van der Bellen’s 56.4 percent, while in Vienna, Hofer took 38.8 percent to Van der Bellen’s 61.2 percent.

In the state of Tirol, Hofer took 50.7 percent of the vote, to Van der Bellen’s 49.3 percent. In the Salzburg state, Hofer took 55.1 percent to Van der Bellen’s 44.9 percent.

In the state of Kärnten, Hofer took 60.1 percent of the vote, to Van der Bellen’s 39.9 percent. In the state of Steiermark, Hofer took 60.1 percent of the vote, to Van der Bellen’s 41.3 percent.

In the state of Niederösterreich, Hofer took 54.3 percent of the vote, to Van der Bellen’s 45.7 percent. In the state of Oberösterreich, Hofer took 50.7 percent of the vote, to Van der Bellen’s 49.3 percent.

Finally, in the state of Burgenland—which borders Hungary and has borne the brunt of the border crossings by the nonwhite invaders—Hofer took 63 percent of the vote to Van der Bellen’s 37 percent.

Hofer’s total vote increased by 437,892 votes from the first round last month, when he polled 1,499,971 votes, while Van der Bellen’s vote jumped by 880,639 votes from his first round total of 913,218 votes.

The final results should be available mid-morning Austrian time on Monday, May 23.
