‘France breaks own rules on Roma camps’

Defender of Rights’ official Dominique Baudis said on Friday that the current rules on how to evict Roma migrants from illegal camps are rarely respected.

“Too often, the expulsions are carried out without a judge having authorized them. Too often the three-month delay from a judgment being made to a camp being dismantled is not respected,” said Baudis.

Under current regulations, camps can only be cleared three months after a judge has ruled it illegal and only if there is an action plan to provide alternative housing for the evicted.

However, according to a report published earlier this year by the European Association for the Defense of Human Rights (AEDH), a staggering 80 percent of the 12,000 Roma evicted last year were forced to leave without receiving an alternative housing plan.

The ombudsman’s accusations came just days after Interior Minister Manuel Valls said that “the majority of Roma should be delivered back to the borders,” describing their way of life as “extremely different from ours,” and claiming they will never integrate into French society.

Two of Valls’ cabinet colleagues called his remarks unacceptable, while right groups described them as racist and threatened to press charges against the minister for incitement to racial hatred.

The European Commission also renewed its threats of imposing sanctions against France over its treatment of the Roma community and reminded Paris that the minority were EU citizens and therefore free to travel wherever they wish.

European Commissioner Viviane Reding accused Valls of picking on a persecuted minority for electoral gain, saying the French government always brings up the Roma issue when French lawmakers do not want to discuss important issues such as budget and debt.

The country is set to hold municipal elections next March as the administration is under pressure on a number of issues including record high unemployment, increasing public debt, crime and insecurity.
