Valls said on Wednesday that he has “nothing to correct” and that the remarks “only shocked those who do not know the subject.”
“The majority (of Romas) should be delivered back to the borders,” said Valls adding, “We are not here to welcome these people. I’d remind you of (former Socialist premier) Michel Rocard’s statement: ‘It’s not France’s job to deal with the misery of the whole world’.”
The remarks came a day after Valls said any non-working Romas in France should be sent back to the borders, describing their way of life as “extremely different from ours,” and claiming they will never integrate into French society.
Roma organizations in France say they are planning to press charges against Valls for incitement to racial hatred, while Amnesty International described the minister’s call as likely to “perpetuate stereotypes and encourage animosity” towards the more than 20,000 Roma people currently living in France in makeshift camps.
French politician Arnaud Montebourg commented on the minister’s remarks on the difficulties of integrating Romas by saying, “Decreeing in advance that it is impossible seems to me excessive and is worthy of being corrected.”
Furthermore, European Commissioner Viviane Reding observed that “every time they [French politicians] don’t want to talk about important things like the budget and debt, the Roma issue gets brought up.”
This comes while the French government has repeatedly been criticized for its systematical dismantling of Roma camps and for offering the expelled residents free flights and financial incentives to return to their countries of origin, mainly Bulgaria and Romania.
Critics say the dismantlement and the offering are inhuman and a waste of taxpayers’ money as the Roma population remains stable despite thousands of government-financed repatriations. Any Roma who has been flown back to its country of origin can immediately return to France under EU freedom of movement laws.
