The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union is worried more jobs will be lost at north west mining equipment manufacturer Caterpillar.

The company laid off about 100 Tasmanian contractors earlier this year after announcing last year it was opening a new factory in Thailand.

The union’s state secretary John Short says the remaining jobs in Burnie need to be secured.

“We have got a very skilled committed work force here in Burnie and we want to make sure that’s continuing,” Mr Short said.

“We want to make sure there are jobs for not only the workers but their children and their grandchildren.”

Caterpillar has been contacted for comment.
