Two friends with a shared bond, the experience of having been American children in France, have collaborated on a memory of food and travel. Their book Paris to Provence: Childhood Memories of Food and France by Ethel Brennan and Sara Remington, a pair of food writers and photographers, could be considered the ultimate road trip cookbook. French road trips aren’t quite like American ones, perhaps most importantly because of the snacks. The authors give recipes for cornichon pickles, rustic pâtés, and sandwiches on crusty baguettes.
Next the pair hit up French markets with their rich bounty of fruits and vegetables. Recipes like fried smelt with aioli and fig tart make it clear this is not an American menu. The book also includes recipes for French streetfare including beignets, crepes, and candied peanuts.
And no French cookbook would be complete without a visit to the famed cafes and bistros. What do you want to dine on while sitting at a little table in a French bistro? Salade Nicoise perhaps, or a Croque Madame sandwich?
In addition to the recipes the book is full of photographs that capture the romance of a French summer alongside the authors’ recollections of their youth, their very similar voices forming more of a chorus than two distinctive narratives. The overall feel of the book captures both the rustic flavors of France and the promise of a summer full of food and fun.
