Full Moon In Scorpio: Navigating The Intensity

We are having a Full Moon in Scorpio on April 22nd, 2016. During Full Moons, we feel a push and pull between two opposing signs; in this case, the polarity is between Taurus and Scorpio.

The themes build up in the 2 weeks leading up to it and then resolve themselves in the 2 weeks following by facilitating some sort of action or change. A release may happen as well. The days closest to the Full Moon are generally the most lively, revelatory, tense, and emotionally charged of this process.

This Full Moon comes on the heels of Mars — Scorpio’s ruler — turning retrograde. It is also happening a month after a Lunar Eclipse and a Solar Eclipse that occurred just before that. This indicates that what occurs during this time will be related (directly or indirectly) to how the eclipses have affected each of us as well as how Mars retrograde will influence our lives over the coming months.

Scorpio: Passion, Intensity, Power, Control, Depth

Whenever we have a Full Moon, whatever sign it is in is felt the most strongly out of both polarities. Scorpio has a very powerful energy which can manifest in both positive and negative ways.

At best Scorpio can be deep, transformative, strategic, loving, and generous, with no room for superficiality. At worst Scorpio energy is controlling, manipulative, jealous, obsessive, vengeful, deceitful, and overly suspicious. Death and rebirth are also Scorpio themes. This is the sign of extremes and complexity and it is also associated with deep intimacy and sexuality. It is also the detective of the zodiac and very calculated.

scorp-g-embScorpio is about willing to look at the worst and darkest aspects of things and making judgements and decisions based on this awareness. A good friend of mine who is a Scorpio used to say that ‘everyone is guilty until proven innocent.’ This may sound extreme but this is a perfect example of the potential nature of Scorpio energy.

The Sun opposing the Moon is in Taurus which is practical, thorough, solid, calm, and loyal, and is about staying true to one’s values. At worst, this sign can be greedy, stubborn, and lazy, and tries to avoid anything that isn’t pleasant, beautiful, or sensual. Taurus looks at what’s on the surface, what is ‘of quality,’ and what is real. However, it lacks the depth and complexity of Scorpio.

During this Full Moon, we will experience a tug-of-war between the energies of these two signs. In some cases there may be an opportunity to integrate these polarities, which can help us to minimize any potential challenging effects. Or perhaps we may encounter a challenging circumstance that makes us do so.

Scorpio’s Rulers, Mars and Pluto, are Now Retrograde

In the 4-5 days before this Full Moon, both Mars and Pluto will have gone retrograde. Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio while Pluto is the modern sub-ruler.

The retrograde of Mars will last until June 29th. The ‘higher purpose’ of this period is for us adjust the way we assert our drive and will. This happens through circumstances which are usually challenging.

mars-rxMany people experience more tension and more conflicts, both of which are ultimately growth-oriented experiences for us. They may not seem helpful now, but things will become clearer later.

Because Mars just started its retrograde and the Full Moon is in a Mars-ruled sign, this period is likely to be the most intense and is the beginning of a process that will unfold over the coming months. You can read more about it here.

Pluto rules the deeper, darker, and more powerful aspects of Scorpio. In retrograde motion happening congruently with Mars, this can be a time when we look at our motives and how they influence how we assert ourselves. Pluto rules over the Scorpio themes of power, control, manipulation, intensity, secrets, and transformation. This is an opportunity to reflect on our motivations towards these themes, whether positive or negative.

Venus, the ruler of Taurus, is in the Mars-ruled sign of Aries conjunct Uranus separating a square from Pluto. These energies could represent surprises or sudden changes and perhaps the need to rebel or break free from a situation or relationship that is controlling, suffocating, manipulative, or intense.

Things To Consider During This Period

It is important to be cautious about how you take action during this period. Is not a good time to be impulsive and it would be wise for you to think things through before reacting to anything or anyone, whether it is a conflict or some other situation that seems to require action. For some people Full Moons in this sign can create anxiety, if so, it would be wise to meditate.

During this time, it is more likely that any negative behaviour that is overly aggressive, vengeful, manipulative, controlling, or any abuse of power will eventually backfire. It is best to take the ‘higher road’ by adopting a diplomatic and fair approach (indicated by last month’s Lunar Eclipse), as well as to reflect before taking action as much as you can instead of reacting impulsively.
